DNS checker

See every record for your domain, live: where it points, who manages its DNS, and whether it's set up right for your host.

Connecting it to a host? Pick it to see whether the records are right for that host.

Looked up live through Cloudflare's public resolver (1.1.1.1). Other networks may still remember older answers for up to the time shown next to each record.

What you're looking at

The records, in one line each

A
Points a name at an IPv4 address. Hosts with fixed addresses, like GitHub Pages, use A records for the bare domain.
AAAA
The same for an IPv6 address. A leftover AAAA record from a parking page is a common reason a certificate won't issue.
CNAME
Points a name at another name, such as www → your-site.netlify.app. The usual record for www and other subdomains.
ALIAS / ANAME
A CNAME for the bare domain, resolved by your DNS provider. It shows up here as the A records it resolves to.
NS
The nameservers: the provider whose records count. If they point at Cloudflare, records added at your registrar are ignored.
CAA
Which certificate authorities may issue for the domain. If there are any, your host's authority has to be among them.
MX
Where email for the domain goes. Website changes don't touch these.
TXT
Free text, used to prove you own a domain (hosts and email services ask for one) and for email settings like SPF.

Questions

About DNS checks

How do I check a CNAME record?

Enter the domain above and look at the www row: a CNAME shows the name it points to, such as your-site.netlify.app or sites.99helpers.site. To check it against what your host expects, pick the host before you check.

What's the difference between an A record and a CNAME?

An A record points a name at a fixed address. A CNAME points it at another name, so the host can move its servers without you changing anything. The bare domain can't have a normal CNAME, which is why it takes A records or an ALIAS instead.

How long does a DNS change take?

A new record usually shows up within minutes. A changed record takes until the old answer expires, which is the time shown next to it: often an hour, sometimes up to a day.

Why does my computer show something different?

Your computer and your network keep answers for a while. This checker asks Cloudflare's public resolver fresh each time; if it shows the new record and your computer doesn't, wait a little or try a phone on mobile data.

Is this checker free?

Yes, and there's nothing to sign up for. It only reads public DNS records, the same ones anyone can look up.
