www or the bare domain?
www.example.com can always point at a host with one CNAME record. The bare domain (example.com) can't have a CNAME, so it needs an ALIAS-type record or the host's fixed addresses. Most hosts suggest www as the main address and the bare domain redirecting to it.
How long does it take?
Usually minutes, sometimes up to a day while the old answer expires around the world. The certificate for https follows once the host sees the records.
