Your domain and https

ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS with Cloudflare in front of your site

The browser says the page “redirected you too many times” (ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS), usually right after putting Cloudflare in front of the site.

The short answer

Cloudflare's encryption mode is set to Flexible: Cloudflare asks your host over http, the host sends it to https, and round it goes. Set the mode to Full (strict), or switch the record to DNS only.

Find your cause

3 causes, most likely first

  1. 1

Flexible SSL with a host that forces https

How to tell: Cloudflare's SSL/TLS encryption mode is Flexible, and your host redirects http to https, as GitHub Pages, Netlify, Vercel and 99helpers all do.

    Fix

In Cloudflare, open SSL/TLS and set the encryption mode to Full (strict). Your host already has a valid certificate, so strict works.

  2. 2

The proxy isn't needed at all

How to tell: The record shows an orange cloud, and your host has its own CDN.

    Fix

Switch the record to DNS only (grey cloud). Vercel advises against a proxy in front of it, and with DNS only the host issues and renews its certificate without help.

  3. 3

Two redirect rules fight each other

How to tell: A Cloudflare redirect rule sends www to the bare domain while the host sends the bare domain to www, or the other way round.

    Fix

Keep one direction: remove the rule at Cloudflare, or change the primary domain at the host to match.

Questions

Also asked

Is Flexible SSL safe otherwise?

It encrypts only between the visitor and Cloudflare; the hop to your host is plain http. With a host that has its own certificate there's no reason to use it.

Rather not fight DNS?

On 99helpers a domain is one CNAME record. The domain dialog checks your DNS as you go and says exactly what's missing, and the certificate is issued and renewed for you.

A file, a folder or a whole site: 99helpers puts it online at its own address, with no git, no build settings and no DNS to start with. Add your own domain whenever you're ready.
