Why this is harder than it should be

A portfolio has one job: be somewhere a stranger can look at your work in the thirty seconds they've allocated to deciding about you. That argues for a real address rather than a PDF attachment or a Drive folder — and against paying a monthly subscription for a site builder while you're between jobs.

Site builders charge monthly for one page

A subscription makes sense for a business. For a portfolio you update twice a year, it's a recurring cost for something that rarely changes.

A PDF portfolio doesn't survive a phone

A design portfolio laid out for print becomes an exercise in pinch-zooming on the device most people will actually open it on.

Drive links look provisional

A folder link with a permission prompt says 'work in progress'. An address says you meant it.

Worth knowing

  • Export images at web resolution. A portfolio full of print-resolution photographs is slow on mobile data, which is where a lot of people will open it.
  • The whole site has 100 MB and 500 files to work with — plenty unless you're including full-size photography.
  • WebP images are roughly a third smaller than JPEG at the same quality, which noticeably improves load time.
  • Include a way to contact you on the page itself; people won't hunt for it.
  • Anyone with the link can see it, so leave out client work you're not permitted to show.

A website, if you have the choice — it reads properly on a phone and looks more considered. Host the PDF alongside for anyone who asks for a file.
