Why this is harder than it should be

A CV gets forwarded between people you'll never meet — a recruiter, a hiring manager, someone on a panel. Each forward is a chance for the attachment to be stripped, opened in the wrong application, or replaced with an older copy. A link survives all of that, and it's short enough to say out loud when someone asks where they can find your details.

Attachments get mangled in transit

A Word CV opens differently depending on the reader's version and fonts. A PDF is more reliable, but still lands in a downloads folder rather than in front of anyone.

Worth knowing

  • Many applicant tracking systems parse .docx more reliably than PDF, so keep a .docx to upload into forms even if you share a link.
  • Your CV contains your contact details and work history, and anyone with the link can read it — consider leaving your full address and phone number off the hosted version.
  • An HTML CV that reflows on a phone reads far better than a PDF laid out for A4.
  • Keep the address stable so the link on old applications keeps working.

Both, usually. Attach the file the application asks for, and include the link so anyone it's forwarded to can open it in one click on any device.
Is it safe to put my CV at a public URL?
The link is public and can be forwarded, so treat everything on the page as visible to strangers. Many people leave their full postal address and phone number off the hosted version for exactly that reason.
Will recruiters be able to open it?
A PDF or HTML CV opens straight in any browser, on any device, with nothing to install — which is more than can be said for a .docx attachment.
Can I update it after applying?
Yes, and that's one of the better reasons to use a link. Publish the corrected version to the same address and every application that included the link now points at it.
