What is a .sr2 file?
SR2 is Sony's earlier raw format, used by the first Alpha DSLRs around 2006 after Sony acquired Konica Minolta's camera business. ARW replaced it shortly afterwards, so SR2 files are almost always archives rather than new work.

Old raw archives are worth revisiting — modern raw conversion extracts far more from a 2006 file than the software of the time could.

- Can modern software open SR2?
- Lightroom, darktable and RawTherapee all still read it, though it's tested less thoroughly than current formats. Converting to DNG is the safe move for an archive.
- My raw file is over the size limit — what can I do?
- Convert to DNG with Adobe's free DNG Converter, which typically cuts 15–20% while keeping the file fully editable. That's usually enough to bring it under 25 MB.
