What is a .ttf file?
TrueType, developed by Apple in the late 1980s and adopted by Microsoft, is the font format both operating systems have used ever since. A .ttf installs on any computer and works in every application, which makes it the usual way fonts are distributed for desktop use.
What people use TTF files for
- Sharing a brand typeface with a designer or agency
- Distributing a font with a design template
- Fonts for desktop installation
- Web fonts, though WOFF2 is smaller for that purpose
What opens a TTF file
- Windows, macOS and Linux, all of which install TTF directly
- Every design and office application
- Browsers, via @font-face
- FontForge and Glyphs, for editing
How to host a TTF file
- 1
Drop your TTF file in
Drag it onto the box at the top of this page, or click to choose it. Files up to 25 MB are supported, and nothing is uploaded until you publish.
- 2
Pick an address
Type a name and we'll tell you straight away whether it's free. That becomes the link: typeface.99helpers.site
- 3
Publish and share
Create a free account — that step exists so the file is yours to update, replace or delete — and the link is live within seconds.
The same three steps work for any file — see how file hosting works on 99helpers.com.
What happens when someone opens the link
The file downloads, and double-clicking it opens the operating system's font installer.
Why host a TTF file instead of emailing it?
Fonts are routinely emailed between designers and clients and routinely blocked by mail filters, which treat font files as suspicious attachments. A link avoids that entirely.
Worth knowing before you publish
- For web use, convert to WOFF2 — it's roughly half the size and just as widely supported.
- Commercial font licences usually prohibit redistribution; hosting one publicly may breach yours.
- Include the licence file alongside if you're distributing an open-source font.
TTF hosting questions
- Can I use a TTF as a web font?
- Yes, with @font-face, but WOFF2 is about half the size for identical rendering. Convert for web use and keep the TTF for desktop installation.
- Is it legal to share a font file?
- For open-source fonts, yes. Most commercial licences prohibit redistribution, and hosting a font at a public URL is redistribution. Check the licence first.
- TTF or OTF?
- OTF supports more advanced typographic features like ligatures and alternates. TTF is marginally more universally supported. For most uses either is fine.
