What is a .nef file?
NEF (Nikon Electronic Format) is Nikon's raw format, used across its DSLR and Z-series mirrorless cameras. Nikon offers both 12-bit and 14-bit capture, and lossless or lossy compression — which is why two NEF files from the same camera can differ substantially in size.

- For archiving or sending to someone with unknown software, yes — DNG is smaller and opens in more places. For your own Lightroom workflow, there's no need.
