What is a .mobi file?
MOBI is the ebook format Amazon adopted for the Kindle after acquiring Mobipocket in 2005. Amazon has since moved to newer formats and stopped accepting MOBI for new uploads, but a great many existing ebooks are still in it, and older Kindles still read it.
What people use MOBI files for
- Ebooks distributed for older Kindle devices
- Review copies sent to readers directly
- Books converted from EPUB with Calibre
- Archived ebook libraries
What opens a MOBI file
- Kindle devices and the Kindle app
- Calibre, for reading and converting
- Most e-reader software, with varying support
How to host a MOBI file
- 1
Drop your MOBI file in
Drag it onto the box at the top of this page, or click to choose it. Files up to 25 MB are supported, and nothing is uploaded until you publish.
- 2
Pick an address
Type a name and we'll tell you straight away whether it's free. That becomes the link: my-book-kindle.99helpers.site
- 3
Publish and share
Create a free account — that step exists so the file is yours to update, replace or delete — and the link is live within seconds.
The same three steps work for any file — see how file hosting works on 99helpers.com.
What happens when someone opens the link
The file downloads. Getting it onto a Kindle means either the Send to Kindle service or a USB connection — Amazon no longer accepts MOBI through Send to Kindle, so converting to EPUB is now the reliable route.
Why host a MOBI file instead of emailing it?
Ebook files are too large for many mailboxes and awkward on services that make readers sign in. A direct link works for anyone, and can sit behind a signup form or go straight to a reviewer.
Worth knowing before you publish
- Amazon deprecated MOBI for Send to Kindle — host an EPUB as well, which is what they now accept.
- Calibre converts between MOBI and EPUB in seconds if you need both.
- Anyone with the link can download it, so this suits freely distributed books rather than paid ones.
MOBI hosting questions
- Can I still send a MOBI to a Kindle?
- Only by USB to older devices. Amazon stopped accepting MOBI through Send to Kindle, so for anything new you want EPUB — convert with Calibre and host that instead.
- MOBI or EPUB?
- EPUB, for anything new. It's the open standard, every reading app supports it, and Amazon now accepts it. MOBI is worth hosting only for existing files and older devices.
- How do readers open it?
- The file downloads, then goes to a Kindle by USB, or opens in Calibre or a compatible reading app.
