What is a .heic file?
HEIC is the container Apple has used for iPhone photos since iOS 11. It uses HEIF compression to store a photo at roughly half the size of the equivalent JPEG with no visible quality loss — excellent for storage, awkward for sharing, because browser support outside Safari is still poor.

What happens when someone opens the link
In most browsers the file downloads rather than displaying, because Chrome and Firefox don't render HEIC. Safari shows it inline. If you need it to display for everyone, convert to JPEG before uploading.
Why host a HEIC file instead of emailing it?
HEIC files are what your phone actually produces, and sending them to people on Windows or Android reliably causes confusion. Hosting one at a link at least gets it to them intact — though converting to JPEG first is usually the kinder choice.
Worth knowing before you publish
- To make the photo display in every browser, export it as JPEG from Photos before uploading — on iPhone, Share then Options then Most Compatible does this.
- iPhones can be set to shoot JPEG instead: Settings, Camera, Formats, Most Compatible.
- HEIC photos carry location data by default; strip it before publishing anything public.
HEIC hosting questions
- Why won't my HEIC file open in the browser?
- Chrome and Firefox don't support HEIC — only Safari renders it. The file downloads instead, and needs an app that understands the format. Converting to JPEG solves it for everyone.
- How do I convert HEIC to JPEG?
- On iPhone, use Share then Options then Most Compatible. On Mac, open in Preview and export as JPEG. Then host the JPEG, which displays everywhere.
- Should I host HEIC or convert first?
- Convert, unless you specifically need the original. A JPEG displays in every browser on every device; a HEIC will confuse most people who receive the link.
