What is a .dotm file?
DOTM is a Word template that can contain VBA macros — typically a form that validates entries, or a document that assembles itself from data. The distinct extension exists so Word and mail filters can spot files that might execute code.
What people use DOTM files for
- Automated form templates
- Document assembly tools
- Templates that pull in data
- Internal tools built in Word
What opens a DOTM file
- Microsoft Word, which prompts before enabling macros
- LibreOffice Writer, with partial VBA support
How to host a DOTM file
- 1
Drop your DOTM file in
Drag it onto the box at the top of this page, or click to choose it. Files up to 25 MB are supported, and nothing is uploaded until you publish.
- 2
Pick an address
Type a name and we'll tell you straight away whether it's free. That becomes the link: form-template.99helpers.site
- 3
Publish and share
Create a free account — that step exists so the file is yours to update, replace or delete — and the link is live within seconds.
The same three steps work for any file — see how file hosting works on 99helpers.com.
What happens when someone opens the link
The file downloads. Word disables macros by default and warns the reader — standard for any macro-enabled file.
Why host a DOTM file instead of emailing it?
Mail filters block macro-enabled attachments routinely, which is exactly when a link helps. The trade-off is that the VBA becomes publicly readable.
Worth knowing before you publish
- Tell recipients what the macro does, or most will decline the security prompt.
- Never leave server paths or credentials in the VBA — it's readable by anyone.
- If macros aren't needed, .dotx avoids the warnings.
DOTM hosting questions
- Why does Word warn about this template?
- Macro-enabled files are disabled by default when they come from outside your organisation. That applies to any DOTM.
- Is the VBA visible to anyone?
- Yes — anyone who downloads the file can read the macros, so review them for anything sensitive before publishing.
- DOTM or DOTX?
- DOTX unless the template genuinely needs macros; it can't contain code, so it passes more filters and opens cleanly.
