The basics
What is a PPSX file?
A PPSX file is a PowerPoint presentation saved as a PowerPoint Show. Microsoft describes it as "a presentation that always opens in Slide Show view rather than in Normal view": double-click it and the first slide fills the screen, with no ribbon, slide list or editing tools. Press Esc, or click past the last slide, and PowerPoint closes it again.
People use it to send a finished deck that should be watched rather than edited, and for booths, kiosks and screens that run a presentation unattended. Inside, it's built exactly like a PPTX, the Office Open XML format (ECMA-376, ISO/IEC 29500) PowerPoint has used since 2007. Its binary predecessor is PPS.
- It's a normal presentation with a different label. Slides, notes, media and animations are all there and can be edited in PowerPoint.
- It isn't protected. A show is not read-only or locked; anyone with PowerPoint or LibreOffice can open it for editing. To hand out slides that can't easily be changed, send a PDF.
- It can't contain macros. A show with VBA code is a PPSM.

What's inside a PPSX file
A PPSX is a PPTX package with one different line. Our sample-minimal.ppsx is the hand-written eleven-part package from the PPTX page with that line changed; here it is, part by part, plus the optional show settings from sample-kiosk.ppsx.

50 4b 03 04The ZIP signature
Every PPSX starts like every PPTX and every ZIP file. The
filecommand calls both our deck samples "Microsoft PowerPoint 2007+"; it can't tell a show from a presentation. - 2
[Content_Types].xmlThe content types
Lists the type of each part. It's the only place where a show and a presentation differ.
- 3
…presentationml.slideshow.main+xmlThe show content type
For the main part,
ppt/presentation.xml. A PPTX says…presentationml.presentation.main+xmlhere and a POTX…presentationml.template.main+xml. PRONOM, the UK National Archives' format registry, identifies PPSX files by exactly this string. - 4
_rels/.relsThe package relationships
Point to
ppt/presentation.xmlwith the ordinaryofficeDocumentrelationship, as in a PPTX. There's no separate relationship type for shows. - 5
ppt/presentation.xmlThe presentation part
The slide list, the masters and the slide size. Its XML is the same PresentationML as in a PPTX, element for element.
- 6
ppt/slides/ … ppt/theme/Slides, layout, master, theme
Unchanged from a PPTX. The PPTX page explains each part.
- 7
<p:showPr loop="1" …>Show settings (optional)
In
ppt/presProps.xml: how the show runs.loop="1"repeats it until Esc,useTimings="1"uses each slide's timing, and<p:kiosk/>is PowerPoint's "Browsed at a kiosk (full screen)". A PPTX can carry the same settings; they don't make a file a show.
Under the hood
What makes a PPSX different from a PPTX
One line in [Content_Types].xml: the content type of ppt/presentation.xml. Our sample-deck.ppsx and sample-deck.pptx hold the same four slides, and every part in the two packages is byte-for-byte identical except that file. The diff:
< <Override PartName="/ppt/presentation.xml" ContentType="application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.presentationml.presentation.main+xml"/>
---
> <Override PartName="/ppt/presentation.xml" ContentType="application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.presentationml.slideshow.main+xml"/>| Extension | Content type of ppt/presentation.xml |
|---|---|
.pptx | application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.presentationml.presentation.main+xml |
.ppsx | application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.presentationml.slideshow.main+xml |
.potx | application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.presentationml.template.main+xml |
.ppsm | application/vnd.ms-powerpoint.slideshow.macroEnabled.main+xml |
- Renaming isn't converting. It changes the extension but not the content type, and programs that read the package can follow the content type. In our tests, LibreOffice 24.2 detected
sample-deck.ppsxrenamed to.pptxas a show, andsample-deck.pptxrenamed to.ppsxas an ordinary presentation. Reports for PowerPoint vary too, so use Save As. - Libraries may refuse it. python-pptx 1.0 rejects a PPSX ("not a PowerPoint file, content type is '…slideshow.main+xml'"). Changing the content type in
[Content_Types].xmlto the presentation type, or the other way round, converts between the two without PowerPoint. - LibreOffice 24.2 writes the wrong type. Its "PowerPoint 2007–365 AutoPlay" export saves a
.ppsxwhose content type still says presentation, so the file opens in the editor when it's reopened. That's why our samples were finished by code rather than saved by LibreOffice.
Show settings
Kiosk loops and self-running shows
Opening straight into the show is the only thing the PPSX format adds. How the show then runs is set inside the file, in PowerPoint under Slide Show, Set Up Slide Show, and it works the same in a PPTX:
| Setting | Where it's stored | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Browsed at a kiosk (full screen) | <p:kiosk/> in ppt/presProps.xml | Loops the show until someone presses Esc, according to Microsoft |
| Loop continuously until Esc | loop="1" on <p:showPr> | Starts again after the last slide |
| Use timings | useTimings="1" | Advances slides by their timings instead of by clicks |
| Advance after a time | advTm="4000" on each slide's <p:transition> | Moves on after 4,000 milliseconds |
| Don't advance on click | advClick="0" on <p:transition> | A click no longer moves to the next slide |
Our sample-kiosk.ppsx has all five: four slides that fade to the next every 4 seconds and loop. Rehearse Timings (Slide Show tab) records timings for each slide, and recorded narration plays during the show if Play narrations is on (showNarration).
How to
How to open, edit and convert a PPSX file
- Watch it: double-click it in File Explorer or Finder. PowerPoint starts the show; Esc ends it.
- Edit it in PowerPoint: start PowerPoint first and use File, Open to open the
.ppsx, which opens it in the editor. Dragging the file onto an open PowerPoint window works too. - Turn it into a PPTX: after opening it for editing, File, Save As, **PowerPoint Presentation (*.pptx)**. With LibreOffice:
soffice --headless --convert-to pptx show.ppsx. - Make one: File, Save As, **PowerPoint Show (*.ppsx)**. Microsoft's instructions are under "Start a presentation automatically with a PowerPoint Show".
- LibreOffice Impress (free, Windows, Mac, Linux) detects it as a "PowerPoint 2007–365 AutoPlay" file, a filter set up to start the presentation, and can edit it.
- Keynote and Google Slides: Apple's list of files Keynote opens names PPTX, and Google's list of convertible files names PPT and PPTX. Save the show as a PPTX first.
- Convert to PDF or video: File, Export in PowerPoint, or
soffice --headless --convert-to pdf show.ppsx. - In a browser: browsers can't display PPSX files, so a link to one downloads it.
Comparison
PPSX vs PPS, PPSM, PPTX and PDF
| Extension | What it is | Structure | Macros | Opens as |
|---|---|---|---|---|
.ppsx | PowerPoint Show | ZIP of XML | No | Slide show |
| `.pps` | PowerPoint 97-2003 Show | Binary, OLE2 | Yes, same extension | Slide show |
| `.ppsm` | PowerPoint Macro-Enabled Show | ZIP of XML plus VBA | Yes | Slide show |
| `.pptx` | PowerPoint Presentation | ZIP of XML | No | Editor |
| `.pdf` | Fixed pages | PDF objects | No (but JavaScript) | Viewer or browser; full screen if the file asks for it |
Use PPSX when the people receiving the deck have PowerPoint and should see transitions, animations, video and timings. Use PDF when they only need to read the slides, on any device.
Troubleshooting
Common PPSX problems and how to fix them
- I can't edit it: double-clicking starts the show. That's what a PPSX does. Open it from inside PowerPoint with File, Open, then save a PPTX copy.
- I renamed it to .pptx and it still opens as a show. The content type inside still says slide show. Use Save As instead of renaming.
- The show doesn't advance. It's set to advance on timings, or clicks are turned off for kiosk use. Wait, use the arrow keys, or open it for editing and check Slide Show, Set Up Slide Show and the Transitions tab.
- It never ends. The show loops (kiosk mode or "Loop continuously"). Press Esc.
- It opens in the editor, not as a show. It was probably saved by an app that wrote the presentation content type, such as LibreOffice 24.2's AutoPlay export, or it's a PPTX that was renamed. Re-save it from PowerPoint as a PowerPoint Show.
- It downloads as a ZIP file. The server sends
application/zipor an unknown type. Serve it with the PPSX MIME type above.
Security
Is a PPSX file safe to open?
A PPSX can't hold VBA macros, but because it opens straight into a full-screen show, it skips the moment where you'd see the slides in the editor first. Attackers have used that: in 2017 Trend Micro described spam with PPSX and PPS attachments whose slide had a link with a mouse-over action. Hovering over it, and then accepting PowerPoint's security prompt, ran a PowerShell command that downloaded malware. Trend Micro pointed out that Office's Protected View disables the content of suspicious files by default, so the attack depended on the victim enabling it.
- Action settings on shapes can open web pages or start programs on click or hover. PowerPoint asks first; say no for a file you didn't expect.
- Embedded OLE objects can hold other files that run when activated.
- Macros need a PPSM, or the binary PPS, which can contain them under the same extension.
- Hidden content travels with the show: speaker notes, comments, hidden slides and author names, as in any PPTX.
Keep Protected View on, and don't agree to prompts from a slide show you weren't expecting. To check a show first, open it with File, Open in PowerPoint, which shows the slides in the editor. Our samples contain no macros, links to programs or embedded objects.

Sample PPSX files to download
Free sample PowerPoint Show files for testing uploads, file-type detection, viewers and converters. python-pptx built the deck; the show content type was then set by code. Each file is a valid ZIP package, loads in python-pptx once its content type is switched to the presentation type, and converts to PDF with LibreOffice. None contains macros.
Browsers can't show this kind of file in a page. Download it to open it in the app it belongs to.
What's inside sample-deck.ppsx
Browsers can't preview PPSX files, so download it and double-click it: PowerPoint starts the show. These are the parts to look for.

Minimal PPSX, eleven parts
sample-minimal.ppsx · 4.6 KB (4,723 bytes)

- Parser tests: don't assume optional parts exist
- Seeing the show content type on its own
Ways to test with them
- Show or presentation:
sample-deck.ppsxandsample-deck.pptxstart with the same bytes and thefilecommand calls both "Microsoft PowerPoint 2007+". Read the content type of/ppt/presentation.xmlin[Content_Types].xmlto tell them apart. - Opening behaviour: double-click
sample-deck.ppsxin the app you're testing. It should start the slide show;sample-deck.pptxshould open the editor. - Libraries: python-pptx 1.0 opens
sample-deck.pptxbut rejectssample-deck.ppsxbecause of its content type. Decide whether your code should accept shows, and test both. - Timings:
sample-kiosk.ppsxadvances every 4 seconds and loops. A player that waits for clicks, or a converter that dropsadvTm, will show it differently. - MIME types: check that your server sends
application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.presentationml.slideshowfor.ppsx, not the PPTX type orapplication/zip.

Put it online
Have a PPSX file? Give it a link.
Drop a PowerPoint Show on 99helpers and it gets its own link. Browsers can't play PPSX files, so visitors download it and PowerPoint starts the show; to have the slides viewed in the browser, upload a PDF version.
Questions
PPSX files, frequently asked
What is a PPSX file?
A PowerPoint Show: a presentation in the Office Open XML format that opens directly in Slide Show view instead of the editor.
What's the difference between PPSX and PPTX?
Inside, only the content type of the main part: …slideshow.main+xml instead of …presentation.main+xml. In use, a PPSX starts the slide show when it's opened, a PPTX opens for editing.
How do I edit a PPSX file?
Start PowerPoint, then use File, Open to open the .ppsx; it opens in the editor. Save it as a PPTX if you want a copy that always opens for editing.
Can I just rename .ppsx to .pptx?
Not reliably. The content type inside still says slide show, and apps that read it, LibreOffice in our tests, keep treating it as one. Use Save As instead.
How do I convert a PPSX to PDF or video?
Open it for editing in PowerPoint and use File, Export. On a server, soffice --headless --convert-to pdf show.ppsx makes a PDF.
Is a PPSX file read-only?
No. It only opens as a show by default. Anyone with PowerPoint or LibreOffice can edit it. Send a PDF if you don't want the slides changed easily.
What's the difference between PPSX and PPS?
PPS is the binary PowerPoint 97-2003 show format and can contain macros. PPSX is its Office Open XML successor and can't; macro shows use PPSM.
Can a PPSX file contain a virus?
It can't contain macros, but it can hold links and actions that try to start programs, and spam campaigns have used shows for that. Keep Protected View on and refuse prompts from shows you didn't expect.
