The basics
What is an ORF file?
ORF is the raw format of Olympus digital cameras, including the Four Thirds E-series SLRs, the OM-D and PEN Micro Four Thirds cameras, and since 2022 the OM System cameras such as the OM-1. When the camera is set to RAW (or RAW + JPEG), each photo is saved as an .orf file.
Like all raw formats, it holds one value per photosite, measured behind a red, green or blue filter, before the camera demosaics it into colour pixels, sets the white balance, applies its picture mode or Art Filter and makes a JPEG. In an ORF all of that is stored as settings, which raw software applies, or overrides, later.
- 12 bits per photosite: 4,096 levels, against 256 per channel in an 8-bit JPG. Current cameras store them with lossless compression; Imaging Resource's OM-1 specification lists "12-bit lossless compressed RAW (.ORF)".
- It looks flatter than the camera's JPEG when an editor opens it with neutral settings.
- Art Filters are only settings. They show in the camera's preview JPEG; most third-party raw editors ignore them. OM Workspace can apply them.
- Not for sharing. Browsers can't display ORF. Export a JPG or HEIF for that.
Anatomy
What's inside an ORF file
Olympus never published the ORF format. This outline combines the signatures in the freedesktop.org MIME database and libopenraw's format notes with the tag tables and file-type checks in Phil Harvey's ExifTool. The meanings of the maker-note tags are reverse-engineered; libopenraw still lists the maker-note layout and parts of the sensor data packing as undocumented. An ORF is a TIFF file in every respect but one: its first four bytes.

49 49 52 4FA TIFF header with a twist
IImeans little-endian, as in TIFF, but the next two bytes, which are 42 in every TIFF file, readROinstead. ExifTool's TIFF reader treats the valuesROandRS(orORin a big-endianMMORfile) as the mark of an ORF. - 2
IIRO or IIRSWhy TIFF readers reject it
libopenraw lists the three signatures without explaining why Olympus changed the magic number. The effect is that a plain TIFF reader, which checks for 42, refuses the file, so only software that knows ORF opens it.
- 3
08 00 00 00First IFD at byte 8
The freedesktop MIME database matches
IIROfollowed by this offset, noting that the first IFD of an ORF always starts right after the header. - 4
IFD0, IFD1Raw image and preview
libopenraw describes IFD0 as the main image and IFD1 as a 160 × 120 preview, which some files leave out, storing their previews only in the maker notes.
- 5
"OLYMPUS" 00 / "OM SYSTEM" 00Maker-note signature
Olympus's maker notes start with
OLYMPUSand a null byte, followed by the byte order and a version. ExifTool also recognisesOM SYSTEMand a null byte, a 16-byte header, for cameras sold under the new brand. Some Olympus models use a shorterOLYMPheader instead. - 6
2010 EquipmentCamera and lens identity
Body serial number, an internal serial number, lens type, model and serial number, and the same for teleconverters and flashes.
- 7
2020 … 2050Settings for the converter
CameraSettings (shooting modes, art filters, and the position of a JPEG preview), RawDevelopment, ImageProcessing (white balance levels, colour matrix, crop) and FocusInfo. A raw converter reads several of these to render the photo as the camera intended.
History
From Olympus to OM System: what changed for ORF files
On 1 January 2021, Olympus transferred its camera business to OM Digital Solutions, a new company 95% owned by a subsidiary of the private equity firm Japan Industrial Partners, with Olympus keeping 5%. The first camera released by the new company, the PEN E-P7 in June 2021, still carried the Olympus name. In February 2022 the OM System OM-1 launched the new brand.
| Olympus cameras | OM System cameras | |
|---|---|---|
| Extension | .orf | .orf |
| File signature | IIRO, IIRS or MMOR | The same structure |
| Maker notes start with | OLYMPUS (some models: OLYMP) | OM SYSTEM on cameras sold under the new brand |
| Software | Olympus Viewer 3, then Olympus Workspace | OM Workspace |
For users little changed: the files keep their extension and structure, and raw software supports each new camera model as it appears. The different maker-note header is mainly a concern for metadata tools, which had to learn the new signature.
Variants
High Res Shot ORF files
Many OM-D and OM System cameras have a High Res Shot mode: the camera moves its sensor between several exposures and combines them into one image with far more pixels than the sensor has. On the OM-1, Imaging Resource lists an 80-megapixel composite from a 20-megapixel sensor. In raw mode the camera saves the combined result as an ORF.
Not every app opens High Res Shot raw files
These ORFs are much larger and differ from normal ones, and support lags. Apple's list of supported raw cameras marks several models, including the E-M1 Mark II and III, the E-M5 Mark II and III and the OM-1 Mark II, as supported "excluding RAW images taken using High Res Shot". OM Workspace opens them.
How to
How to open and convert an ORF file
- OM Workspace (Windows and macOS, from OM System's download site, which asks for a camera serial number): OM System's viewer and raw editor, the successor to Olympus Workspace. It applies the camera's own picture modes and Art Filters, has AI noise reduction for supported cameras, and with some cameras can use the camera's processor over USB (USB RAW processing) for faster conversion.
- Adobe Lightroom, Lightroom Classic and Photoshop (Camera Raw), Capture One, DxO PhotoLab and Affinity Photo all read ORF.
- Free and open source: darktable and RawTherapee on Windows, macOS and Linux.
- Just looking: Photos and Preview on a Mac, for cameras on Apple's supported list; Windows Photos with Microsoft's free Raw Image Extension.
- In the camera: the playback menu's raw data edit option saves a JPEG copy with new settings.
# check the signature: expect "IIRO", "IIRS" or "MMOR"
head -c 4 P1010001.ORF; echo
# save the embedded JPEG preview
exiftool -b -PreviewImage P1010001.ORF > P1010001.jpg
# render the raw data with darktable
darktable-cli P1010001.ORF P1010001.jpgFor older software that doesn't know a newer camera, Adobe's free DNG Converter makes DNG copies that older Lightroom and Photoshop versions open.
Troubleshooting
Why won't my ORF file open?
- The camera is newer than your software. Every new model has to be added. Update, or convert with Adobe DNG Converter.
- It's a High Res Shot file. Some apps open normal ORFs from a camera but not its High Res Shot files. Use OM Workspace or an up-to-date Lightroom.
- A TIFF tool calls it corrupt. It is checking for the TIFF magic number 42 and finding
ROorRS. The file is fine; use a raw converter. - Art Filter or picture mode missing. Third-party editors develop the raw data with their own settings. Apply the look in OM Workspace, or use the camera's JPEG.
- Colours differ from the camera. Choose a camera-matching profile in your editor, or develop in OM Workspace.
Comparison
ORF vs JPG, HEIF and DNG
| ORF | JPG | HEIF | DNG | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| What it holds | Sensor data plus settings | Finished picture | Finished picture | Sensor data plus settings |
| Bits | 12 per photosite | 8 per channel | 8 or 10 per channel | Up to 16, or floating point |
| Structure | TIFF with its own signature | JPEG segments | ISO base media boxes | TIFF |
| Specification | Unpublished | Open (ISO) | Open (ISO) | Published by Adobe, ISO 12234-4 |
Shoot ORF when you plan to edit or the light is difficult: white balance and exposure can be changed far more than in a JPEG. For quick sharing, RAW + JPEG keeps a ready-made copy.
Privacy
Metadata in ORF files
An ORF can't run code, but its Exif data and maker notes record a lot:
- Body and lens serial numbers in the Equipment directory, linking every photo to your gear.
- Location, if the camera took it from a phone app or has GPS.
- Copyright and author text set in the camera menu, plus dates and every setting.
Check with exiftool -a -G1 photo.orf, and remove GPS with exiftool -gps:all= photo.orf. Don't strip all maker notes from the raw file itself, since converters need them; share an exported JPEG with metadata removed when privacy matters.
Sample files
There are no sample ORF files on this page. Raw files come straight from the camera, so the simplest test file is one shot on an Olympus or OM System camera set to RAW; add a High Res Shot file if your software needs to handle those too.
Put it online
Have an ORF file? Give it a link.
Drop an ORF on 99helpers and it gets its own web address. Browsers can't display raw files, so anyone who opens the link downloads it to open in their own raw software; share a JPG too if people just need to see the photo.
Questions
ORF files, frequently asked
What is an ORF file?
A raw photo from an Olympus or OM System camera. It holds the sensor data before processing, plus the camera's settings and a JPEG preview, in a TIFF-based file with its own signature.
How do I open an ORF file?
Use OM Workspace, Lightroom or Photoshop, Capture One, darktable or RawTherapee. Macs open ORF in Photos and Preview; on Windows, install Microsoft's Raw Image Extension and use Photos.
How do I convert ORF to JPG?
Open it in OM Workspace, Lightroom, Photos or Preview and export as JPEG, or use the camera's raw edit function. For the camera's own preview, run exiftool -b -PreviewImage photo.orf > photo.jpg.
Do OM System cameras still use ORF?
Yes. Cameras from OM Digital Solutions, such as the OM-1, save raw photos as .orf, with the same structure as Olympus files.
Is ORF lossless?
On current cameras, yes: 12-bit data with lossless compression. The camera's JPEG is lossy, but the ORF keeps all the sensor data.
Why won't my High Res Shot ORF open?
Some apps, including Apple's Photos for several cameras, support normal ORFs but not High Res Shot files. Use OM Workspace or a current version of Lightroom.
What happened to Olympus Workspace?
It became OM Workspace after Olympus's camera business passed to OM Digital Solutions in 2021. It still opens ORF files from Olympus cameras.
