The UOP file (.uop)

A UOP file is a presentation in the Uniform Office Format (UOF), the Chinese national office document standard GB/T 20916, written as XML with Chinese element names. This guide explains what's inside one, how it compares with ODP and PPTX, which programs read it, and has free sample UOP files to download for testing.

The basics

What is a UOP file?

A UOP file is a slide presentation saved in the Uniform Office Format (UOF), China's national standard for office documents. UOF was developed by the Chinese Office Software Work Group with domestic office suite makers and published as GB/T 20916-2007, "Specification for the Chinese office file format", in April 2007. It covers text documents (.uot), spreadsheets (.uos) and presentations (.uop) with one shared design.

The format's most visible trait is its language: element and attribute names are Chinese, such as 演:幻灯片 for a slide and 字:段落 for a paragraph. Like OpenDocument and Office Open XML, it is an open XML format, and around 2007 there was public discussion of harmonising UOF with ODF. The two never merged, and they make different design choices, as the anatomy shows.

You're most likely to meet UOP files in Chinese government or education settings, or when testing a converter's coverage of rarer formats.

What's inside a UOP file

A UOP from LibreOffice is not a ZIP: open it in any text editor and you see the whole presentation as one XML document. This is our sample-minimal.uop, one slide with one title, in outline. LibreOffice writes every style it knows, so even this file is about 145 KB.

A slide doesn't contain its shapes. It places them with anchors (uof:锚点) that give the position and size and refer to an object by ID. In an ODP the shapes sit inside the slide.

Versions

UOF 1.0, 2.0 and what LibreOffice supports

  • UOF 1.0 is the version of the 2007 standard. LibreOffice reads and writes it with XSLT stylesheets that translate between UOF and ODF, a filter first added to OpenOffice.org in 2006. It writes the whole document as one XML file; a 2014 message on the LibreOffice developers' list calls it a flat XML implementation.
  • UOF 2.0 is a later revision worked out by Chinese vendors. LibreOffice's filter doesn't handle it; WPS Office says it supports UOF, including 2.0.
  • The LibreOffice filter is old. A 2014 message to the LibreOffice developers' list noted that it covers only part of UOF 1.0 and doesn't handle current documents. It still ships in LibreOffice 24.2, which is how we made our samples.

Test the round trip

We built our sample deck in Impress, saved it as UOP and opened the UOP again. Text, slides, notes and the arrow came back, but the two boxes on slide 3 lost their rounded corners and their centred bold labels, the fade transitions became 演:效果="none", the keywords were left empty, and the second-level bullet changed shape. Compare sample-presentation.uop with sample-presentation.odp to see it yourself.

The size difference in the last row is mostly compression: an ODP is a ZIP package, while LibreOffice's UOP is uncompressed text that also spells out every style. Compressed with gzip, a UOP of the same deck came to about 8 KB.

How to

How to open and convert a UOP file

  • LibreOffice Impress (free; Windows, macOS, Linux) opens UOF 1.0 presentations; choose File, Open and pick the .uop file.
  • WPS Office and other Chinese office suites support UOF; check which version a given program reads.
  • Microsoft PowerPoint doesn't open UOP files. Convert in LibreOffice first.
  • Convert from the command line: soffice --headless --convert-to odp deck.uop (or pptx, or pdf).
  • Save as UOP: in LibreOffice, File, Save As and choose Unified Office Format presentation, or soffice --headless --convert-to 'uop:UOF presentation' deck.odp.
  • In a browser: a browser would show a UOP as raw XML at best, so a link to one is downloaded. Export a PDF to share the slides.

Troubleshooting

Common UOP problems and how to fix them

  • LibreOffice opens it as text or refuses it. It may be a UOF 2.0 file or come from software that writes a different variant. Try the program that made it, or WPS Office, and export to PPTX or ODP from there.
  • Formatting changed after opening. The UOF filter covers only part of the format. Expect rounded corners, text alignment in shapes, transitions and some bullet styles to change.
  • The file is huge. LibreOffice writes uncompressed XML with every style in it. Zip it for storage or email, or convert to ODP.
  • Chinese text shows as boxes. The font isn't installed. Install a font with Chinese characters, such as Noto Sans CJK, and open the file again.
  • My XML tool chokes on the tag names. They're valid XML; the tool or its encoding settings must handle UTF-8 names, not only UTF-8 text.

Security

Is a UOP file safe to open?

A UOP from LibreOffice is a single XML file, so the main risks are those of any XML input. Programs that parse it should, like any XML parser facing untrusted files, refuse external entities and limit entity expansion, which blocks XXE and "billion laughs" attacks.

  • Metadata in uof:元数据 includes the author, dates and the application that wrote the file.
  • Speaker notes are stored in the file and survive conversion. Check them before sharing.

Sample UOP files to download

Free sample Uniform Office Format presentations for testing file-type detection, converters and Chinese text handling. Both decks were built in LibreOffice Impress 24.2 and saved with its UOF presentation filter; the source deck is included as ODP for comparison. Each UOP was checked as well-formed XML with a uof:UOF root and opened again in LibreOffice, with the right slide count, by exporting it to PDF. Everything in them is fictional.

What's inside sample-presentation.uop

Browsers can't preview UOP files as slides, so download it and open it in LibreOffice Impress, or in a text editor to read the XML. These are the parts to look for.

  1. Three slides

Three 演:幻灯片 elements in 演:幻灯片集: a title slide, a bullet slide and a slide with shapes.

  2. English and Chinese text

The title slide's subtitle has 示例演示文稿 (sample presentation) above the 99helpers line, in 字:文本串 text runs.

  3. Bullets on two levels

Five paragraphs in an outline text box, the last one indented a level.

  4. Shapes and an arrow

Slide 3 anchors two filled rectangles and a line with an arrowhead, each a 图:图形 object in the object set.

  5. Speaker notes

Each slide has a 演:幻灯片备注 element with a note, such as "Bullets are paragraphs (字:段落) inside a text box object."

  6. Transitions

The source deck fades between slides; the UOP stores 演:切换 演:效果="none", so the filter dropped them.

  7. Metadata

Title, subject, author and the description "… Free sample from 99helpers.com/file-types/uop" in uof:元数据.

    • Measuring conversion fidelity
  • One-slide UOP

    sample-minimal.uop · 144.4 KB (147,858 bytes)

One slide with one title, "Hello, UOF". It's the file shown in the anatomy above, and shows how much the filter writes even for an almost empty deck.

    • Quick format detection tests
    • Seeing UOF's overall structure without slide content

Ways to test with them

  • File type detection: both UOP files start with <?xml and have a uof:UOF root with uof:mimetype="vnd.uof.presentation". A detector that only sees "XML" (as the Unix file command does) needs to read the root element.
  • Conversion fidelity: convert sample-presentation.uop and sample-presentation.odp to PDF and compare slide 3. The differences are the UOF filter's losses, not your converter's.
  • Unicode names: load the UOP files with your XML parser or XPath tool and select //演:幻灯片 with the 演 prefix bound to http://schemas.uof.org/cn/2003/uof-slideshow. You should get 3 slides and 1 slide.
  • Upload and size limits: at about 200 KB and 145 KB of plain text, the files compress well. Check that your upload path doesn't reject .uop or sniff it as a generic XML file.

Questions

UOP files, frequently asked

What is a UOP file?

A presentation in the Uniform Office Format (UOF), the Chinese office document standard GB/T 20916-2007. It's XML with Chinese element names.

How do I open a UOP file?

With LibreOffice Impress, which reads UOF 1.0 presentations, or with a Chinese office suite such as WPS Office that supports UOF.

Can PowerPoint open UOP files?

No. Open the file in LibreOffice and save it as PPTX, or run soffice --headless --convert-to pptx file.uop.

What's the difference between UOP and ODP?

Both are open XML formats for presentations. ODP is a ZIP package with English tag names; a UOP from LibreOffice is one XML file with Chinese tag names, and it keeps shapes in a shared object set that slides point to.

What standard is UOF?

GB/T 20916-2007, "Specification for the Chinese office file format", issued on 30 April 2007 and in force from 1 September 2007.

What are UOT and UOS files?

The text and spreadsheet members of the same family. LibreOffice opens them in Writer and Calc.

Why is my UOP file so large?

LibreOffice writes it as uncompressed XML with every style included. Zip it, or convert to ODP, which is compressed.
