The basics
What is a 3GP file?
3GP is the video format that the 3rd Generation Partnership Project, the body that standardises GSM, UMTS and LTE mobile networks, defined for phones. It was designed for small screens, slow networks and limited processors: video messages (MMS), clips downloaded or streamed to a phone, and videos recorded with the phone's camera. Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Samsung and other phones of the 2000s saved their videos as .3gp, and Android phones offered it as a recording format for years.
Technically, a 3GP file is a member of the MP4 family: it uses the ISO base media file format, the same box structure as MP4 and MOV, with a 3GPP brand and a short list of codecs suited to phones. That's why many MP4 players open 3GP files, and why converting between them is often quick.
Where you'll find 3GP today
Mostly in old phone backups, archived MMS messages and clips from basic phones. Modern smartphones record MP4 or MOV.
Anatomy
What's inside a 3GP file
A 3GP file uses the same building blocks as MP4: boxes that start with a 4-byte size and a 4-letter type, some containing others. Here is the box tree of a 1-second 3GP we made for this page with FFmpeg, in the classic phone resolution of 176×144. It isn't offered for download, and it uses AAC audio because the FFmpeg build we used has no AMR encoder. Offsets and sizes are in bytes; a few boxes in the audio track are left out to save space.

33 67 70 34 (3gp4)The 3GPP brand
3gp4says the file follows the 3GPP Release 4 rules. FFmpeg uses it for H.263 files and3gp6when the video is H.264; phones wrote3gp4,3gp5,3gp6and others. The compatible brandsisomandiso2tell general MP4 readers they can open it too. - 3
moovThe movie box
Tracks, codecs and the tables that locate every frame, at the front because this file was written with faststart. Phones that recorded straight to memory usually put it at the end.
- 4
tkhd 176×144QCIF resolution
176×144 pixels, called QCIF, was the standard size for H.263 video on early camera phones and in MMS messages. Later phones recorded 320×240 or 640×480.
- 5
stsd "s263" / d263The H.263 sample entry
3GPP defines its own sample entry for H.263,
s263, with ad263box giving the encoder's vendor code and the H.263 level and profile (level 10, profile 0, the baseline). An H.264 3GP usesavc1as in MP4, and AMR audio usessamr(narrowband) orsawb(wideband). - 6
stsd "mp4a"The audio sample entry
AAC, here at 22.05 kHz mono. Most phone videos instead have AMR-NB: speech-quality audio at 8 kHz and 4.75 to 12.2 kbit/s, the same codec used for phone calls.
- 7
udta / titl3GPP metadata
3GPP defines its own metadata boxes:
titlfor the title, plus others for author, description and copyright, each with a language code (hereeng). They're different from the iTunes-style tags MP4 files usually carry, so some tag editors don't show them. - 8
mdatThe media data
The compressed H.263 and AAC frames, interleaved. As in MP4, they can't be decoded without the tables in
moov, so a phone video cut off while recording often won't open.
Versions
3GP brands, releases and codecs
Each 3GPP release of the file format has its own brand in the ftyp box, and a file lists the brands it conforms to. The file format specification, 3GPP TS 26.244, gives these among others:
| Brand | Meaning | Typical content |
|---|---|---|
3gp4 | Release 4 file for MMS and download | H.263 video, AMR audio |
3gp5 | Release 5 file for MMS and download | H.263, AMR |
3gp6 | Release 6 file for MMS and download | H.263 or H.264, AMR, timed text |
3gr6 | Release 6, progressive download profile | Interleaved media for playing while downloading |
3gs6 | Release 6, streaming-server profile | Media with hint tracks for streaming servers |
3gp7 and later | Later releases | As above, with newer features |
| Codec | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| H.263 | Video | The original 3GP video codec, from video telephony. Small resolutions such as 176×144. No browser plays it. |
| MPEG-4 Part 2 | Video | Common on mid-2000s phones; the same family as DivX and Xvid. |
| H.264 | Video | Later phones. A 3GP with H.264 and AAC is close to an ordinary MP4. |
| AMR-NB | Audio | Narrowband speech codec at 8 kHz, adopted by 3GPP in 1999. The usual sound in phone videos. |
| AMR-WB | Audio | Wideband speech (16 kHz), better for voices, still not music quality. |
| AAC | Audio | Music-quality audio, used by later phones and converters. |
Variants
3GP vs 3G2
Mobile networks split into two families in the 3G era, each with its own standards body. 3GPP covered GSM and UMTS networks, used in most of the world; 3GPP2 covered CDMA2000 networks, used by some operators in North America and Asia. 3GPP2 defined its own variant of the file format, with the extension .3g2, the media type video/3gpp2, brands such as 3g2a, and support for the speech codecs of CDMA phones.
| 3GP | 3G2 | |
|---|---|---|
| Standards body | 3GPP | 3GPP2 |
| Networks | GSM, UMTS (and later LTE) | CDMA2000 |
| Extension | .3gp | .3g2 |
| MIME type | video/3gpp | video/3gpp2 |
| Brands | 3gp4, 3gp5, 3gp6… | 3g2a and others |
| Audio | AMR-NB, AMR-WB, AAC | AAC and CDMA speech codecs; some phones also used AMR |
In practice both are opened by the same software, and VLC, mpv and FFmpeg treat them alike. A .3g2 that won't play usually fails for the same reason a .3gp does: its speech codec.
Troubleshooting
Why 3GP videos play without sound, or not at all
The most common 3GP complaint is a picture with no sound. The cause is almost always AMR audio. AMR is a speech codec designed for phone calls, and it's covered by patents licensed through a pool administered by VoiceAge. Phones and phone-oriented software include a decoder, but many desktop players, editors and web browsers don't, so they play the video and skip the audio track.
| Symptom | Usual cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Picture but no sound | AMR-NB or AMR-WB audio, which the player can't decode. | Play it in VLC, or convert the audio to AAC: ffmpeg -i in.3gp -c:v copy -c:a aac out.mp4 (works when the video is H.264 or MPEG-4 Part 2). |
| Won't play in a browser | H.263 or MPEG-4 Part 2 video, or AMR audio: browsers support neither. | Convert to MP4 with H.264 and AAC (command below). |
| Tiny, blocky picture | Recorded at 176×144 or 320×240 with a low bit rate. | Nothing restores lost detail. Upscaling makes it bigger, not sharper. |
| File won't open at all | The recording was interrupted before the index (moov) was written. | Repair tools can rebuild the index using a good file from the same phone as a template. |
| Audio out of sync after conversion | Variable frame rate from the phone's camera. | Convert with a constant frame rate, for example -r 30. |
How to
How to open, edit and convert a 3GP file
- Any system: VLC and mpv play 3GP and 3G2 files with every common codec, AMR included.
- Windows: the Media Player app plays many 3GP files; VLC handles the rest.
- macOS: QuickTime Player opens many 3GP files; VLC or IINA when it can't.
- Android: the built-in gallery and video players play 3GP. On an iPhone, use VLC.
- Edit: convert to MP4 first; most editors handle H.264 MP4 better than H.263 or AMR.
# any 3GP or 3G2 to an MP4 that plays everywhere
ffmpeg -i in.3gp -c:v libx264 -crf 20 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 96k -movflags +faststart out.mp4
# H.264 video already? keep it, convert only the audio
ffmpeg -i in.3gp -c:v copy -c:a aac out.mp4
# what's inside
ffprobe in.3gpHandBrake does the same with presets, if you'd rather use an app. Phone videos are small, so there's no reason to keep the low bit rate: the -crf 20 setting keeps what detail there is.
Security
Is a 3GP file safe?
- Old personal content. 3GP files often come from old phone backups and MMS archives: private messages and videos of people who didn't expect them to be shared. Check before you put a batch online.
- Metadata. Phones could store the recording date, phone model and sometimes location.
ffprobelists the tags;ffmpeg -i in.3gp -map_metadata -1 -c copy out.3gpremoves them. - Decoder bugs. A 3GP file can't run code, but media parsers on phones have had serious flaws triggered by crafted files: the 2015 Stagefright bugs in Android could be set off by an MMS message. Keep phones and players updated.
Sample files
There are no sample 3GP files on this page. To make one for testing, run ffmpeg -f lavfi -i testsrc2=duration=5:size=176x144:rate=15 -f lavfi -i sine=frequency=440:duration=5 -c:v h263 -c:a aac -ar 22050 -ac 1 test.3gp; AMR audio (-c:a libopencore_amrnb -ar 8000) needs an FFmpeg build with that encoder.
Put it online
Have a 3GP file? Give it a link.
Drop a 3GP or 3G2 file on 99helpers and it gets its own address to send instead of an attachment. Browsers can't play H.263 video or AMR audio, so visitors download it; convert it to MP4 first if it should play in the browser.
Questions
3GP files, frequently asked
What is a 3GP file?
A video in the 3GPP format, which mobile phones used for recording and sending video in the 2000s and early 2010s. It's a relative of MP4, usually with H.263, MPEG-4 or H.264 video and AMR or AAC audio.
How do I play a 3GP file?
VLC plays almost every 3GP and 3G2 file on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iPhone. Android's own player plays most of them too.
Why does my 3GP video have no sound?
It probably has AMR audio, a phone speech codec that many players and browsers can't decode. Use VLC, or convert the audio to AAC with FFmpeg or HandBrake.
How do I convert 3GP to MP4?
Use HandBrake, or ffmpeg -i in.3gp -c:v libx264 -crf 20 -c:a aac out.mp4. If the video is already H.264, -c:v copy keeps it and only the audio is converted.
What's the difference between 3GP and 3G2?
3GP comes from 3GPP, for GSM and UMTS phones; 3G2 from 3GPP2, for CDMA2000 phones. They share the same structure and most codecs, and the same software opens both.
Is 3GP the same as MP4?
Not quite, but they're related: both use the ISO base media file format. 3GP adds 3GPP brands, codecs such as H.263 and AMR, and its own metadata boxes.
Can a browser play 3GP?
Mostly not. No major browser decodes H.263 video or AMR audio. A 3GP with H.264 and AAC is close enough to MP4 that browsers often play it once it's remuxed or labelled as MP4.
