# Sample Markdown with front matter

The block between the two `---` lines at the top of this file is
**YAML front matter**. It is not part of Markdown itself: static site
generators such as Jekyll, Hugo and Eleventy, and note apps such as
Obsidian, read it as data about the page (title, date, tags) and leave
it out of the rendered text.

What different tools do with it:

- **GitHub** shows it as a small table above the rendered file.
- **Static site generators** use it for the page title, URL, date and
  layout.
- **A plain CommonMark renderer** knows nothing about it: the first `---`
becomes a horizontal rule and the last line before the closing `---`
  becomes a heading.
- **Pandoc** reads it as document metadata.

The front matter must be the very first thing in the file. A blank line
or a byte order mark before the first `---` stops most tools from
recognising it.
